Maritime Southeast Asia is the largest archipelago in the world and reaches 5000 km from Peninsular Malaysia to Papua New Guinea. The total number of islands equates to 13,677 and includes
Brunei,
Indonesia,
Philippines and
Singapore. Many of the islands are volcanic in origin and some still house active volcanoes and mountainous interior covered in dense impenetrable rainforests. Many of the islands would at some point have been a joined landmass but in the advent of rising sea levels, have been separated. Singapore is one of the wealthiest per capita nations. Elsewhere in the region, natural resources support the overall economy along with farming and agriculture. Petroleum and natural gas are the wealthiest natural attributes of Maritime Southeast Asia. |
