Senegal occupies 531km of coastline on the western fringe of Africa
facing the Atlantic Ocean. In fact, Senegal is actually the
Western-most country within the continent of Africa. Neighboring
countries include Mauritania, Mali, Gambia, Guinea and Guinea
Bissau. Senegal has a total land area of 192,000 sq km, and
waterways measuring 4,190 sq km. Major rivers include the Great
Senegal, Ferlo and Casamance.Senegal is a
very flat country, with elevations never really exceeding 500m. The
flatlands are made up of Clayey Basin and sedimentary basin. Within
the centre of the country, hot and humid conditions prevail,
steadily cooling toward coastal regions. In the south, the Casamance
region is home to an array of great palm forests, housing an
incredibly diverse amount of wildlife. The Great Senegalese
Savannah, is comprised of grassy grazing land and is home to
wildlife such as lions, elephants and gazelles, punctuated by the
odd Baobab tree. The Baobab is a national symbol.
Dakar is the capital of Senegal although it was only built as
recently as the mid nineteenth century. It is home to 1 million
Senegalese and is the hub of industry and economy within Senegal.
Its strategic position, next to the sea, makes it Senegal's
principal port. Dakar is a friendly city where tree-lined boulevards
intersect elegant French colonial architecture. French is the
official national language. The unit of national currency is the CFA
Franc.
The island of Goree off the Senegalese coast has been much coveted
over the years, namely during the years of the slave trade. It
quickly became a huge base for enslaved Africans until the French
intervened in 1816, colonized Senegal and ground the slave trade to
a halt.
The industry of Senegal is comprised of phosphate mining, fertilizer
production, and petroleum refining. Agricultural products include
peanuts, millet, corn, rice, cotton, tomatoes and green vegetables.
Fishing is the main agricultural economy along the coastal belt. The
climate of Senegal is Tropical, yet it has a rather unreliable
annual rainfall, often resulting in serious drought. Temperatures
vary from 22°C to 28°C.
The Senegalese have become one of Africa's great footballing nations, winning the African Nation's Cup in 2002 and
also reaching the World Cup Finals in Korea in the same year. Many
of the players play their club football in France. |
