Romania is located in the east of Southeastern Europe. It borders
the Ukraine in the north, Moldova, the Ukraine and the Black Sea to
the east, Bulgaria to the south and Serbia and Montenegro, Hungary,
Slovakia and Poland to the west. The total land area of Romania
measures 230,340 sq km with a further 7160 sq km of inland water and
a coastline measuring 225 km. The terrain is comprised largely of
mountains and a southern low-lying plain. The Carpathian Mountians
and the Transylvanian Alps are the highest regions. The tallest
point is Moldoveanu at a height of 2544m. The Transylvania region of
Romania is famous for being the birthplace and residence of Count
Dracula and his vampire castle. The townships of outer Transylvania
back onto beautiful evergreen forests. Clashes between man and bear
have occurred in recent years as these animal's search of food has
clashed with civilization.Romania became
infamous in 1989 when it executed its long standing dictator Nicolae
Ceausescu and subsequently revolted. The former communist regime was
overthrown and in modern day Romania there are even talks of joining
the European Union in the near future. The main languages are
Romanian, Hungarian and German and the dominant religion is Romanian
Orthodox. The national unit of currency is the Leu.
Romania has to be one of the poorest countries in Europe. The
economy is mainly industry and service based although 40% of the
national workforce are still employed within agriculture. The main
industries of Romania are textiles, mining, timber, meturlagy,
chemicals and petroleum refining. The transport network of Romania
consists of 11,385 km of railways and 153,359 km of highways. The
crude oil pipeline of Romania measures 2800 km.
The climate of Romania is temperate with long, hot summers and cold,
harsh, snowy winters. Summer is a time of much rain and often freak
thunderstorms. The average January temperature is -4°C. |
